Captain Scarlet is invaluable to the SPECTRUM organisation in their constant battle against the Mysterons. According to their official records, Captain Scarlet is INDESTRUCTIBLE!

This unbelievable situation came about shortly after Captain Scarlet became one of the first victims to be used as a tool of the Mysterons. Killed in a car crash he was brought back to life by the invisible Martian race and used in an attempt to assessinate the World President. The plot failed and the Mysteron-controlled Captain Scarlet fell eight hundred feet from the top of the London Car-Vue, apparently to his death. He did not die but instead quickly recovered from his extensive injuries. The fall did something to his metabolism which has apparently made him completely INDESTRUCTIBLE and thus a most powerful adversary for the Mysterons as the fall brought his mind back to reality and he resumed his loyalty towards SPECTRUM.

You, the readers of this special handbook, compiled by my chief agent CAPTAIN SCARLET, have been specially chosen by our computers to aid SPECTRUM in its duties of maintaining peace around our planet, Earth. As Commander of the SPECTRUM organisation, I have been invited to tell you of the operation.

Basically we were formed as a team of specialists to supplement the existing World Government security forces in their task of keeping order throughout our sector of the Universe. Originally formed to undertake special duties in the constant battles against crime, the bandit Bereznik race and other dangerous elements, we recently found ourselves spearheading the world's defence against the Mysterons from Mars.

We need your help in these tasks and we know we can rely on you.

mysterons?

As far as can be ascertained, the Mysterons were or are a peacefully inclined race, highly skilled in science and technology, who hailed from another galaxy. For some unknown reason they were forced to leave their own planet and seek other worlds in order to continue their existence.

They settled on Mars, bringing their highly advanced computers along to help in developing their new homeland. This all took place many thousands of years ago. As a security measure they developed even more complicated computers designed to offer ruthless retaliation were the planet ever attacked. These computers also had the power programmed within them to reconstruct all matter which had been killed or destroyed.

Apparently the Mysteron race eventually quit Mars but left their defence computers behind. perhaps intending to return at a later date. However, these computers lay dormant for centuries until SPECTRUM'S CAPTAIN BLACK led his ill-fated expedition in an attack against this Mysteron complex. The Captain is now a Mysteron agent and SPECTRUM have been kept constantly on their toes fighting off the Powerful Mysterons' retaliatory attacks on Earth.

The Spectrum Pursuit Vehicle is capable of speeds up to 200 m.p.h., is twenty-five feet long and completely bullet-proof in construction. The driver sits facing the rear of the vehicle, as a safety precaution, and steers by means of a television screen. The vehicle is equipped with radar, two way radio and is fully armed for all emergencies. A plentiful food supply is always carried for extended missions.

The main power unit is detachable and can be adapted for use in driving small personal vehicles or as a jet pack.

Normally the SPV is crewed by one man but there is a passenger seat for use when necessary.

The SPV is also amphibious, the wheels retracting and being automatically sealed by flaps.

Normally the SPV is a six-wheel drive type, but when the power unit is detached for other uses it can be driven on the four small wheels by auxiliary batteries.

colonel white's story

Colonel White, Commander-in-Chief of SPECTRUM, was born in London on July 14th, 2017. His real name is Charles Gray and he is a graduate of King's College, Canterbury and Norwich University. His specialist subjects were computer control, navigation and technology in which he holds first class honours degrees.

On graduation he enlisted in the World Navy and was soon made up to Commanders rank in full command of a destroyer. His fantastic career soon led to his being appointed Admiral of the Fleet. At the age of thirty he dramatically resigned from the service announcing his retirement. This was only a cover for his new appointment to the Universal Secret Service. This led to his present post as Commander of the recently-formed SPECTRUM organisation.

There are three main types of aircraft in use by SPECTRUM at present.
These are:—
(a) ANGEL AIRCRAFT
A single seat strike aircraft with a top speed of 3,000 m.p.h. They are a development of the World Army Air Force "Viper" jet but vastly imporved technically. Special modifications were to make the craft suitable for operation from Cloudbase. They are sixty feet long and packed with electronic devices and computers. The now cone houses a hyper sensitive instrument cluster. The Angel Pilots enter the craft from below, ready strapped into their seats.

(b) SPECTRUM HELICOPTER
Another personnel carrier basically, the SPECTRUM helicopter is also useful as a rescue craft being capable of landing on rough terrain, shifting sand and heavy seas. It is forty-five feet long with a maximum speed of 302 m.p.h. The helicopter heavily armed but not basically designed for combat operations, except in emergencies.

(c) SPECTRUM PASSENGER JET
Designed for rapid transportation of agents to the scene of action or ferrrying personnel and equipment to Cloudbase, this is a non.combat aircraft capable of up to 1,125 m.p.h. It has a range of 12,000 miles and a seating capacity for seven passengers. It is seventy-eight feet long and has a wing span of thirty-seven feet. Power is supplied by twin reheat turbo jets. In common with the Angel aircraft it is fitted with nose stabilising fins for supersonic flight.

LOCATION: Spectrum Moon Outpost. OATELINE: 31st October. 2067. "Spectrum Jet, code 2X3 calling Cloudbase. This is Colonel White. Am about to leave Moon Outpost. ETA Cloudbase 23.50 hrs. Earth time."

The ever watchful Lieutenant Green quickly checked his Universal Flight Control Indicator and answered "Cloudbase to Spectrum Jet code 2X3. Flight path P.42-6 clear all the way."

"Spectrum Jet, code 2X3 to Cloudbase. S.I.G. Launching... now!"

The powerful motors of the space plane roared into action and within seconds Col. White was well out in space heading for home. He had been on one of his rare excursions away from Cloudbase, checking on Spectrum's latest defence measures on their Moon Outpost.

Meanwhile, things back at Cloudbase had been proceeding in routine fashion. Captain Blue was duty officer for the week and Captain Scarlet was attending a top level conference at World Government headquarters on security matters

The peace of Cloudbase was suddenly shattered. A booming, ominous voice was heard...

THIS IS THE VOICE OF THE MYSTERONS. COLONEL WHITE WILL BE ABDUCTED! Despite the shock of this announcement, the highly trained men of Spectrum swung into immediate action. "Launch Angels One, Two ond Three!" Captain Blue snapped out his orders and Lieutenant Green set them in motion: "Destiny Angel — immediate launch! Modesty and Rhapsody Angels — immmediate launch Angels two and three!" Within seconds the three Angel craft were airborne and heading for Colonel White's aircraft to act as escorts.

Having taken the first precautions to safeguard Colonel White and inform him of his plans, Captain Blue's next task was to recall Captain Scarlet from Government heedquarters.

"Lieutenant Green, contact Captain Scarlet immediately. We're going to need him against this latest Mysteron threat."

"S.I.G. Captain Blue," replied Lieutenant Green. "I'll get him right away."

Thanks to highly developed Spectrum communications link, Captain Scarlet appeared on video immediately. "What's the problem, Captain Blue?" he asked.

"It's the Mysterons again. But this time they say they will kidnap Colonel White" replied Captain Blue. "We've launched the Angels and taken all possible precautions. Can you return Cloudbase immediately?"

"I'm leaving right away. Keep me informed of any developments."

"S.I.G.. Captain Scarlet, We'll expect you in half an hour."

Captain Scarlet set off for Cloudbase immediately and Captain Blue contacted Destiny Angel for a progress report. "Destiny Angel, this is Captain Blue. Have you mede contact with Spectrum Jet, code 2X3 yet?"

"S.I.G. Captain Blue. Colonel White's craft in sight now; About to make direct contact."

The three Angel aircraft took up formation around Colonel White's jet and Destiny tried to make contact — but without success. There was no reply. Destiny reported back to Cloudbase.

Captain Blue instructed Destiny to make visual contact to see if she could indentify Colonel White in the cockpit of the plane. As she zoomed in close to carry out her orders the chilling voice of the Mysterons was heard again.

WE, THE MYSTERONS, HAVE COLONEL WHITE IN OUR POWER. HE WILL REMAIN UNHARMED IF YOU AGREE TO SURRENDER CAPTAIN SCARLET TO US. YOU HAVE HALF AN HOUR TO DECIDE.

Captain Scarlet had meanwhile arrived at Cloudbase. He made his way to the Control Room to meet a worried Captain Blue. He studied the reports swiftly and gave his solution unhesitatingly:—

"There's nothing else for it. I shall give myself up to the Mysterons."

"But you are our only sure weapon against the Mysterons. Since you have become indestructible we have been able to defeat most of their plans" argued Captain Blue.

Captain Scarlet pointed out that his indestructability gave him a better fighting chance than Colonel

White and maintained that the Colonel's special administrative abilities were more than invaluable to Spectrum and the World.

Lieutenant Green passed on Captain Scarlets decision to Destiny Angel and so to the Mysterons. A rendezvous was set on a remote Yorkshire moor and Captain Blue and Captain Scarlet left Cloudbase for Earth, landing at a nearby deserted airstrip. They made for the nearest SPV base and collected the vehicle. Soon SPV 434 was speeding along Arterial Route 2 which links London and Aberdeen. As they approached the airstrip they saw Spectrum jet, code 2X3, waiting on the main runway. The surrounding country was desolate. No sign of habitation.

Captain Blue remarked: "Boy, this is like another planet It doesn't seem to have changed since the beginning of time."

"An ideal site for the rendezvous." replied Captain Scarlet. "No chance of an ambush here."

SPV 434 screeched to a halt about fifty yards from the jet. Colonel White was seen descending to the runway. The voice of the Mysterons spoke once more:—

WE ARE READY CAPTAIN SCARLET. MAKE YOUR WAY HERE IMMEDIATELY AND COLONEL WHITE WILL BE FREED.

Captain Scarlet set out towards the jet as Colonel White came towards him. The Colonel protested at the exchange but Captain Scarlet replied: "I think I know how to handle this, Colonel. Tell Captain Blue to do exactly as I say."

The two men passed and Colonel White entered the SPV. As Captain Scarlet reached the jet an electronic device emerged. It was similar

in appearance to a laser beam projector. Captain Black could be seen in the background.

NOW WE WILL DESTROY YOU ONCE AND FOR ALL CAPTAIN SCARLET. WE THE MYSTERONS HAVE THE POWER TO REVERSE MATTER. WE CAN BRING THINGS BACK TO LIFE, RECONSTITUTE MATTER. BUT WE CAN ALSO REVERSE THIS PROCESS AND UTTERLY DESTROY WHAT WE HAVE CREATED. NOW YOU WILL PERISH FOREVER'

As Colonel White and Captain Blue listened, appalled, Captain Scarlet spoke sharply into his headset: "Captain Blue! Shoot me, quickly!" Captain Blue was dumbfounded. But ColoneI White reacted immediately — "Do as he says Captain. It's his only chance!"

Captain Blue fired one of the powerful guns which armed the SPV and shot Captain Scarlet dead just as the Mysterons brought their reversal machine into operation.

As Colonel White and Captain Blue watched the trerrible scene Captain Scarlet's lifeless body gradually recovered under the effect of the reversal ray. His quick thinking had again beaten the Mysterons. Again the voice of the Mysterons spoke

YOU HAVE WON ANOTHER ROUND, MEN OF SPECTRUM. BUT THIS IS ONLY ONE SMALL BATTLE IN AN EVERLASTING WAR. WE WILL BE BACK. BE WARNED THAT WE WILL NEVER REST UNTIL WE HAVE DESTROYED EARTH.

Spectrum jet 2X3 roared off, still under Mysteron command and a mystified Captain Blue helped Colonel White get Captain Scarlet back to the SPV. "Why didn't they repeat the operation when they saw what Scarlet was up to?"

Colonel White replied: "Fortunately, the Mysterons seem to accept a defeat in this way. It's as if they are continually testing us to find our limit and when we pass a test they go off to think up the next one."

"Yes of course, the pattern been obvious." said Captain Blue. "Now let's see how the victim is."

Captain Scarlet was a little dazed but otherwise he seemed just fine. "Good shooting, Captain Blue. Too good, in fact. You've ruined my best uniform."

And so, another battle against the Mysterons won, the trio set out on the return journey to Cloudbase to prepare for the next round in this deadly war.

A high speed vehicle ensuring the mobility of SPECTRUM agents on land. Top speed exceeds 15O m.p.h. and the car is eighteen feet long. Transistorised transmitting and receiving radio keep the driver in constant touch with Cloudbase and other agents. The car is designed to carry five including the driver and the tyres and windscreen are bulletproof. The lighting system also incorporates a laser for long distance viewing and an optical telescope coupled to television screen in the cabin.

maximum security vehicle

A four seat high speed vehicle capable of fantastic speeds in excess of two hundred miles per hour. It is twenty-four feet long and weighs eight tons. Spectrum claim the MSV is indestructible. It has proved invaluable in transporting intended VIP victims of the Mysterons in maximum safety. In the event of gas or radiation hazard the vehicle is automatically sealed and its own pressuriwd atmosphere comes into operation. The shell of the vehicle is four layers thick — armour plating, refrigeration honeycomb, radiation damping sandwich and steel.

Cloudbase, headquarters of the Spectrum organisation hovers permanently 40,000 feet above Earth. Its exact location is a closely guarded secret. Like a giant aircraft carrier it overshadows the world below, its highly trained personnel ever watchful, ready to repulse attacks by aliens and especially attuned to anti-Mysteron duties.

Nothing escapes the mechanical eye of Cloudbase.
